"Riding the Rails, Steam engine buffs travel back in time on the Skunk"

Kids and parents gather around a guitar-strumming, harmonica-puffing minstrel singing "King of the Road," "Wabash Cannonball," "Rock Island Line," and other railroad songs. His name is Greg Schindel, and he provides entertainment during the ride...

Once the trip is under way, don't be surprised if Schindel plunks himself down in the seat across from you for a brief visit. This friendly guy with the weathered face and the perennial smile peeking out from under bushy mustache used to be the music coordinator for Willits Unified School District's elementary schools.

Today he directs arts and music and serves as a substitute teacher for Sherwood School in Willits. Whenever he can - about four times a week -- he hops the Skunk and sings railroad tunes for appreciative passengers.

"My dad worked for the Illinois Central Railroad for 32 years," Schindel said, "but I never even met him until I was in my 30's. So, I guess my love for trains must be genetic."
